Journal 10: Post-Class Conceptions and Learning Experience

Image
(Photo: Megan Salt) Discuss your learning experience in this course. How does your learning experience change your perceptions before taking the class? Use examples of your learning experiences to support your answers. You may also use some of the photos that you took.     My learning experience really didn't alter my pre-class perceptions because I originally had a pretty good handle on what to expect from this class. Looking back on my Journal 1 post, I had no idea how writing intensive this class would be. With my four other heavy engineering courses and full time job, it was a lot to handle. I believe that with my major and obvious passion for the environment, the additional journal posts, reflections, essays and the like were almost unnecessary and more of a nuisance. I already have a predisposed love for the environment and constantly felt that I had to defend or prove this was true in all these assignments. I was hoping for more a laid back approach to Colloqui...

Journal 9: Ecological Footprint and Campus Nature Walk

(Photo: Riley) 1.   FGCU Campus and  Sense of Place  - Where is your favorite place in campus? What makes this place attractive to you? How does this help in your understanding and significance of  Sense of Place?     Now I have two favorite places on campus. The first is the parking garage by the bus loop because on days when I'm leaving class and the sun is getting ready to set, I like to drive all the way to the top and watch the sunset. This way I can see the sun setting just below the line of trees and there are minimal interferences with the skyline. I am usually alone in this and it gives me a second to take a deep breath, compose myself and take in the beautiful campus. Not many places have sunsets as amazing as we do, and I'm lucky if I get out of classes in time to catch one.     My new favorite place on campus would be the cypress dome we just visited! I honestly can't stop ranting and raving about how ...

Journal 8: Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization

Image
(Photo: http://aworldthatjustmightwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/LB-Plan-B4.0.jpg) Discuss your learning experience from based on your assigned Plan B 4.0 issue. Discuss the salient aspects that you read and discussed in your group. Select some aspects of the discussions that resonates with your ideas. What did other team members post that you found intriguing? What is your Plan C on the issue that you discussed? In this journal, you need to make references to Lester Brown's Plan B 4.0 book and any other sources including Pachamama Alliance 's Awakening the Dreamer.     I had previous conceptions about the issues we face regarding food production. I specifically said in my initial discussion post that the food scarcity issue is not an issue of having the ability to grow enough food. After reading Lester Brown's Feeding 8 Billion People Well , it was confirmed to me that we do have the ability to grow an adequate amount of food for al...

Journal 7: Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve

Image
(Photo: Lauren Lukasik) (Photo: Lauren Lukasik) 1. Reflect upon your Six Miles Cypress Slough field trip experience. Why is the importance of its preservation? Please identify the various species that you saw or heard about on this trip.    The slough acts as a multifaceted area of ecological importance. It is home to a diversity of plants and animals, a number of which are endangered. Two examples would be the Southern Bald Eagle or the Florida Panther. Furthermore, the preserve is also an important pit stop in the migratory patterns and a wintering habitat for so many birds. The slough also provides a vital wildlife corridor for various animals moving through the county. (Photo: Lauren Lukasik)     It was also interesting to see the Otter Pond and learn about the different levels of water that allow certain organisms to thrive at specific times, and six months later, the entire landscape is altered once again. ...
